There is a lot of wisdom in Disney’s film Frozen. Especially in the main title song, “Let it go”.
As far as I am aware nobody has successfully created a working time machine. Whatever happened in the past stays firmly in the past and there is nothing we can do about it. We can’t go back and change things, no matter how bad we may want to. We have to ‘let it go…”
We can learn from the past though – and that can be a good thing, as long as you don’t waste time over-analysing it. I’ve met many people who had managed to get themselves stuck a ever repeating loop, going over past mistakes again and again. Doing the whole ‘he said’ ‘she said’ thing. All this leads to is doubt, anger and depression. After a while talking with them, we decided it was best to see the situation for what it was, accept it with all it’s faults… and move on. Take a mental note of the events that happened to ensure they don’t happen again, then chalk it up as a life lesson learned.
Accept that the past is in the past… you can’t change it
Accept that you are still here, alive and breathing, despite past events
Accept that life is full of good times AND bad times
Accept that other people are entitled to their own thoughts & opinions
Accept that what they think of you is none of your business
Be honest with yourself about the past. Don’t try to change events
Sometimes a bad situation in the past can drive you to make yourself a better person. You may have lost the person you thought was the love of your life – but trust me, it’s a big world – and there is always going to be another ‘special someone’ out there for you. Perhaps you were the one behaving badly in a past situation. You have to accept this, deal with the outcome… and move on. Yes, events from the past may continue to haunt you, but you can use them as a way of pointing your life in a positive direction.
Most of you will have watched the Back To The Future trilogy that teaches us that if we were capable of time travel, we would only mess things up!
Getting stuck in the past stops you from going forward. It’s like dragging a heavy anchor about with you. Nobody is perfect – and that is the way it is. Even people who appear to perfect in every way will have a few skeletons in the closet. It’s in our nature to be capable of doing good and bad deeds. Whatever in the past is keeping you from moving forward, go and buy Disney’s Frozen and listen the words in the main song:
Let it go, let it go
Can’t hold it back anymore
Let it go, let it go
Turn away and slam the door!
I don’t care
What they’re going to say
Let the storm rage on,
The cold never bothered me anyway!
It’s funny how some distance
Makes everything seem small
And the fears that once controlled me
Can’t get to me at all!
It’s time to see what I can do
To test the limits and break through
No right, no wrong, no rules for me I’m free!
