How To Find Your Purpose In Life

Do you know why you are here? Are you in control of the direction your life is going? Do you have a heartfelt goal in life? Like most people, I struggle to honestly answer those three questions. I feel that if I could answer them… I would be closer to finding my purpose in life.

Do you know why you are here?

This is deep. There are many answers to why ‘we’ are here right now. Humans have been debating this question for thousands of years – and still don’t seem to have found the answer. Best answer I can give is, we are here because we are here… now get on with it. For me it’s too big a question to be answered, so I am content to just accept that I am here. Beyond that I don’t have any academic input – so best leave this question unanswered (unless you are a practicing philosopher… comments at the bottom of the page, thank you…)

Are you in control of the direction your life is going?

Personally, no – but I am at least aiming in the some sort of direction. For years I was totally lost, like so many people today. I would get up, go to work, go home, watch TV, bed… repeat. More of an existence than a life. It took a tragic family loss for me to realise that life was short and I was wasting it on pointless things. After the funeral I sat down with a piece of paper and wrote out my bucket list (to-do list). One of them was starting this life blog. Another was clearing out all the clutter in my life – you can read about that here, De-clutter Your Life. Sometimes life gives us a sharp kick up the backside to get us back on track. Don’t waste your valuable time – use it wisely and get control of it. Knowing that I have had a ‘full day’ helps me sleep better at night. To know that I have contributed something to lives of the people around me makes me feel fulfilled – it gives me a reason to get out of bed the next day.

Do you have a heartfelt goal in life?

Try to think of this question as a long term investment. Some people set specific goals such as having a set amount of money in the bank or paying off the mortgage by a certain date. With a ‘heartfelt’ goal, I’m talking about something that fills you with passion! An activity you would happily do every day of your life – even if it didn’t pay you a wage. That thing you always end up talking about at parties… the one you dream about. It should be something that is personal to you, is actually achievable and can be attained within a reasonable time scale. If you set your goal too far away, you may wander of track and never reach it.

Ask yourself these questions:

  1. Where are you now?

  2. Where do you want to be?

  3. How are you going to get there?

  4. Are you there yet? (if not, go back to question 1)
